Max Barrett

Circa 1987

A unique serpentine stone sculpture from the highly sought after sculptor Max Barrett.

Barrett is perhaps best known for his monumental sculpture 'The Meeting place' a collosal work carved from a ten ton block of granite, it is on pubic display in the centre of Truro. Barrett passed away in 1997 after a successful career exhibiting extensively in the West Country and London, he stayed true to his Gypsy roots and unconformist lifestye. His philosphophy does echo Michelangelo in that he spoke of 'Finding the shape within the stone'. ''Torso" is a perfect example of his skill and mastery of stone and poetry.

"I try to work with things that have love in them and then get a song and dance out of them."
